MOOP MAMA

    Germany has had an influx of new bands that mix brass band music, which the country is very familiar with, alongside a newer style of spoken word and/or rap music.

    One of the leading bands on the scene for this particular blend of old and new is MOOP MAMA, a ten-piece unit based out of Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The group features two percussionists, two saxophonists, two trombones, two trumpets, and a sousaphone player with a frontman rapper. The group often collaborates with other German rappers or spoken-word artists outside of their typical group.

    Oftentimes, the band is primarily playing accompaniment and hits to emphasize the phrase structure that the vocalist is laying down. On ocassion the band takes the spotlight and gets featured. In live performances peices are often extended to open the floor for improvisatory solos that really highlight the ability of each of the horn players.
